Water damage is one of the most common reasons smartphones break. Despite modern iPhones having high IP water resistance ratings, they are not completely waterproof. If your iPhone took a dive, acting fast is critical.
Immediate Steps to Take
The first 10 minutes are the most important.
1. Turn It Off Immediately
Water conducts electricity. If the device is on, the water will short-circuit the internal motherboard components. Power it down immediately and do not attempt to turn it back on to "check if it works."
2. Remove the Case and Accessories
Remove any protective case, screen protector if it's peeling, and unplug any charging cables or wired headphones. Water can get trapped inside the case.
3. Eject the SIM Card
Remove the SIM card tray to allow air to enter the device and to protect your SIM card data.
What NOT to Do
There are many myths about fixing water damage that can actually destroy your phone permanently.
Do Not Use Rice
Contrary to popular belief, rice does not effectively dry out a phone. Worse, the tiny particles and starch from the rice can enter the charging port and speakers, creating a sticky paste that destroys components.
Do Not Use a Hair Dryer
Heat can melt the adhesives that hold your phone together and can warp internal components. Never use a hair dryer, oven, or microwave.
When to Call a Professional
If your phone was submerged for a long time, or if it was submerged in salt water or chlorinated pool water, the internal corrosion will happen rapidly. You need to take it to a professional technician immediately so they can open the device and clean the motherboard with isopropyl alcohol.
