Home security has evolved from expensive, hardwired systems to accessible, wireless smart devices that you can monitor directly from your smartphone anywhere in the world.
The Core Components
A good smart home security system has three main layers of defense.
1. The Video Doorbell
This is your first line of defense. Devices like Ring or Nest Hello allow you to see, hear, and speak to anyone at your door. They act as a massive deterrent for package thieves.
2. Smart Locks
A smart lock (like Schlage Encode or August) allows you to lock and unlock your door remotely, issue temporary digital keys to guests or dog walkers, and check if you forgot to lock the door after leaving for work.
3. Contact Sensors
These are tiny, inexpensive magnetic sensors placed on ground-floor windows and doors. If the magnetic connection is broken while the system is armed, an alarm triggers immediately.
Network Security
Having a smart home means your home is connected to the internet. This introduces cyber risks.
Secure Your Wi-Fi Router
Never use the default password that came with your router. Change it to a strong, unique password. Additionally, create a "Guest Network" specifically for your IoT devices so they are separated from your personal laptops and phones.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Ensure that your Ring, Nest, or Arlo accounts have 2FA enabled. The most common way hackers access security cameras is through stolen passwords, not by hacking the camera itself.
